After going through basic training in Miami Beach, the Army decided he would make a great military police candidate, despite being short and slim, and shipped him off to New Jersey. But ultimately Dan's dream of flying a plane led him back to Florida for more training. He was perfectly suited to be a tail gunner flying in the most dangerous airplane of its time, flying missions over Nazi Germany. The letters he wrote home describe his feelings and experience.
