Author Jim Blickenstaff was a mailman who had long since given up on getting another dog, believing that the ends of their short lives were too painful for him to bear again. One day, while walking on his route, he happened to meet a very special dog who appeared to be lost. The dog had no collar and no tag-and what's more, it was intent on following Jim home. He took care of the dog, which he called Scooter, and also searched for its owner.
