Research shows that students learn best by doing. This workbook, written by two master teachers, contains 36 field-tested activities, including nine new to the Second Edition, that span the introductory astronomy course and can be used in any size of classroom. Each activity is now self-contained with an introduction that provides necessary background material for students. Activities are built around a concept that leads students from basic knowledge to a deeper understanding through guided interactions. The Second Edition is supported by Smartwork5, so instructors can easily assess student understanding.
NEW ACTIVITIES AND PEDAGOGY BASED ON REVIEWER FEEDBACK MAKE THE SECOND EDITION AN EVEN BETTER RESOURCEIn response to user and reviewer feedback, the authors have made the Second Edition more complete by adding nine new activities. To make the workbook more self-contained, each activity now includes an introduction with basic background information as well as key terms, which are also defined in the new glossary. Images for select activities have been added to an appendix for easy reference.A MORE CONCEPTUAL APPROACH TO QUANTITATIVE LITERACYWhile the authors believe that quantitative literacy is important, the Second Edition asks students to do very little maths. Where appropriate, students are walked through a quantitative explanation rather than being asked to make calculations. In addition, Activities 1 and 2 from the First Edition have been replaced with more qualitative activities. Almost half of the activities include no maths and they are spread out across the whole course. Pre-and post-activity questions in Smartwork5 help prepare students for the activity, then assess students on what they learned by doing the activity.EASILY ASSESS IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE OF CLASSLearning Astronomy by Doing Astronomy is now supported by its own Smartwork5 course containing around 350 pre-and post-activity questions written by Stacy Palen and Ana Larson. These questions, many of which are visual, can be easily assigned as is or customised to meet instructor needs. And each question includes one default feedback statement aimed at helping students master the material. These Smartwork5 questions will be available on the DLP for the workbook. They will also be available in the Smartwork5 courses for each of our introductory astronomy textbooks, so instructors who use the workbook with a textbook will have a one-stop solution for online assessment.PROVEN ACTIVITIES FOR NO ADDITIONAL COSTLearning Astronomy by Doing Astronomy is an affordable way for instructors to incorporate more active learning into their classroom. The workbook can be packaged with any Norton introductory astronomy text for no additional cost.
