A.J. Tomlinson (1865-1943) was one of the most important leaders of early Pentecostalism. A former traveling Bible salesman, Tomlinson became the leader of a holiness group in Camp Creek, Tennessee (known as the Church of God), which was the forerunner of several contemporary Pentecostal denominations. Robins's biography of Tomlinson recreates the world in which he operated, and through his story offers a reinterpretation of the origins of Pentecostalism. Tomlinson's life story offers a compelling narrative through which Robins sheds new light on the roots of some of the twentieth century's most vigorous popular religious movements.
